Richard Estes

Stage Directing

Richard Estes has directed some 35 operas and appeared on the stage in over 90 operatic roles. He has directed, presented master classes, and given workshops in Mexico, Colombia, Italy, Belarus, and the USA. He is founder and director of the TCU/Fort Worth Opera Institute, an intensive program for young artists preparing for the professional audition circuit. Mr. Estes credits his work with Wesley Balk at Juilliard and the Minnesota Opera and with David Ostwald at Western Opera Theater for the development of his own approach to directing and teaching acting to singers. He is also grateful for the influence of directors Rhoda Levine, Lotfi Mansouri, Goetz Friedrich, David Gately, Albert Takazaukis and many others with whom he has worked.

Of his recent CARMEN at the Natchez Festival of Music:

Natchez Festival of Music"The Natchez Festival of Music presented Bizet’s Carmen to a full house Saturday evening.  Richard Estes’ intimate staging brought crispness and clarity to the central action between each character including every chorus member.  Using only a multi-level plat-formed stage with hanging wing banners Estes turned the cast and chorus inside out as they not only became the set but delivered a rivetingly intimate presentation of a grand opera."
